Reintroducing Faust to St. Louis
Unearthing a recipe from the Anheuser-Busch archives
St. Louis's 250th anniversary in 2014 presented the perfect opportunity for A-B brewers to dig into our recipe archives and celebrate our hometown doing what we do best: making beer. After a search, they pulled the recipe for Faust, a beer that holds a firm place in St. Louis history.
Faust was first brewed in 1884 by Adolphus Busch for his good friend Tony Faust's renowned St. Louis Oyster House and Restaurant. The beer, a Vienna-style lager, represented the delicious opportunity for pairing beer with food, and also friendship and camaraderie. In 2015, our brewers continue to celebrate both.
The original recipe, pulled from 17,000 artifacts housed in the Anheuser-Busch archives, offered ingredients and notes about the beer's characteristics including the style, taste and look. Using some “recipe archaeology”, the team recreated a beer that's an interesting part of our local history, according to Joel Boisselle, senior brewmaster at our St. Louis brewery.
The beer is available on draught only in St. Louis, including at The Biergarten and Budweiser Brew House at Ballpark Village. Our brewing and archives teams are excited to once again offer this beer to our hometown.
