Anheuser-Busch Gears Up for Safer Roads to Recognize World Safety Day

Safety is a year-round priority for Anheuser-Busch, but World Safety Day gives all of us extra reason to think about staying safe while on the road, in particular. First observed on April 28, 2003, by the International Labour Organization of The United Nations, World Safety Day was created to raise awareness for and promote safe and healthy work environments across the globe.

With the number of commuters behind the wheel or on the highway at any given moment, no workplace poses a greater risk of accidents than the open road. The 8th leading cause of death worldwide, road traffic collisions claim the lives of approximately 3,000 people every day. And of all road safety hazards, Anheuser-Busch takes drunk driving the most seriously.

As the world's largest brewer, our company and its wholesalers have invested more than $1 billion since 1982 to promote alcohol responsibility and help prevent underage drinking and drunk driving. Most recently, we've focused awareness efforts through our commitment to Together for Safer Roads (TSR), an innovative coalition that brings leading global companies together to improve road safety by advancing safer vehicles, raising awareness, and advocating for more funding and support for road safety initiatives. Along with co-founding members AIG, AT&T, Chevron, Ericsson, Facebook, IBM, iHeartMedia, PepsiCo and Walmart, our company envisions a world in which traffic collisions are no longer one of the leading causes of death and injuries worldwide.

Taking one step further in our own facilities, our employees are asked to sign a pledge never to text and drive, always wear a seatbelt, respect speed limits, and make responsible plans for getting home whenever alcohol is involved. Though we want adults to enjoy our beers, we also implore them to use resources, such as taxis, public transportation and ridesharing or car service apps, to find a safe ride … every time they drink.

The Bud Light Taxi App is a great example of one of the many ways to get home safe. The app – available for iPhone and Android – connects users to taxi companies serving the current location, and provides priority status at peak times. The app is free to download – users merely pay the taxi fare.

Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable when plans for a designated driver or paid ride home are made in advance. Today and every day, let's make safety a priority!
