St. Louis Corporations to Support Tower Grove Park
Funding to Support the Renovation of the Historic Lily Ponds
April 13, 2007
The three lily ponds at Tower Grow Park will be restored and enhanced thanks to the generosity of two St. Louis corporations, Emerson and Anheuser-Busch. The Emerson gift of $250,000 was announced earlier this week. This is now joined by a pledge of $100,000 from the Anheuser-Busch Foundation. This latest gift will be applied to the restoration and endowment of these historic water features.
The lily ponds at Tower Grove have been a popular visitor gathering spot for more than 100 years with displays of colorful and fragrant tropical water lilies. They are currently in need of serious repair and the combined gifts will restore them to top condition. The project also will include a notable improvement in the form of nighttime illumination, inspired by the early 20th century installation of lights to enhance the enjoyment of the night-blooming varieties of water lilies.
“We are very grateful to these two exemplary St. Louis companies," said Park Director John Karel. "Thanks to them, St. Louisans will be able once again to experience this beautiful display as it was originally intended."
The work will begin in October of this year, and is planned for completion in time for the spring season in 2008.
Tower Grove Park is St. Louis' second largest, with 289 acres, and with more than 1 million visitors annually. It was authorized in 1867 and this year marks its 140th anniversary. It was donated by Henry Shaw and is one of only a handful of municipal parks to be designated as a National Historic Landmark.
