Beer Tops Gallup Poll as America’s Beverage of Choice

ST. LOUIS (July 24, 2006) – Data posted on the Gallup Poll’s Web site indicate that once again, beer is America’s beverage of choice. Findings from Gallup’s annual poll on Americans’ alcohol and drinking habits demonstrate adult consumer consumption of wine has decreased, while consumption of beer has increased 5 percentage points since July 2005. Of those Americans who drink alcohol, 41 percent most often drink beer. Beer is the largest segment in the alcohol beverage category in both volume and dollar sales, and accounts for nearly 60 percent of all alcohol beverage servings.

“Today’s adult consumers have more choices than ever before," said Bob Lachky, executive vice president of Global Industry Development for Anheuser-Busch, Inc. “Through innovative products, packaging and programs, such as ‘Here’s To Beer,’ brewers and wholesalers are working hard to remind Americans of beer’s role in our culture. It’s great to see people are responding.”

In February, Anheuser-Busch spearheaded the launch of the “Here’s To Beer” campaign with its first ad broadcast during the Super Bowl telecast and the launch of its Web site, www.herestobeer.com. The grassroots campaign to elevate the image of beer focuses on three key areas:

  • Reminding adult consumers of the social value of beer – it brings people together in an unpretentious way.

  • Romancing the product and the art of brewing – reinforcing beer’s refreshment, all natural ingredients and the beauty of its liquid.

  • Encouraging consumers to view beer differently – giving them new ways to enjoy beer including ideas and recipes for pairing with food.

Since February, www.herestobeer.com, has received more than 300,000 hits. The Web site is available in English and Spanish.

As part of its industry development effort, “Here’s To Beer” also is hosting a consumer contest called “Who Would You Have a Beer With?” at www.herestobeer.com. In the first phase of the contest, entrants nominated anyone – famous or unknown – and provided 50 words or less to make their case. Five finalists were selected to receive a video camera to record their stories, which will be posted on the Web site. Beginning July 24, consumers can visit www.herestobeer.com to vote on their favorite video. The creator of the winning video will receive a trip for four to the ultimate destination for beer lovers, Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany
