Age-Old Decision-Making Game Offers $50,000 Competitive Purse

Bud Light and the USA Rock Paper Scissors (USARPS) League are gearing up for another year of televised hand-to-hand combat to determine the ultimate 2007 United States Rock Paper Scissors League champion -- backed by an offer of $50,000. Local qualifying matches for the 2007 Bud Light/USARPS nationwide Rock Paper Scissors (RPS) tournament kicks off in 325 markets across the United States starting Jan. 15 in search of finalists to compete at the championship event in Las Vegas scheduled May 12-13, 2007.

Players 21 years of age and older from across the United States will risk hand cramps, drained digits and pre-emptive psychological exhaustion for their chance at securing a free trip to Las Vegas for themselves, and an adult guest. At the championship finals, which will be televised on an as yet unnamed TV Network, local tournament finalists will compete for the $50,000 grand prize and their shot at the 2007 USA Rock Paper Scissors League championship title.

“Rock Paper Scissors took the nation by storm last year and proved overwhelmingly popular among our adult Bud Light beer drinkers and regional wholesalers that coordinated the local qualifying tournaments,” said Rick Leininger, director, Bud Light. “It’s a fun, social and co-ed event, which makes it a great sponsorship for Bud Light.”

The tournament will include a second-place cash prize of $5,000, an enduring “Best of 500 throws” between two finalists selected at random for the chance to win a new car and a costume competition for Bud Light prizes.

“The game of Rock Paper Scissors gained national recognition last year as one of the hottest trends in competitive sports,” said Matti Leshem, co-commissioner, USARPS League. “This year, we’re taking this enthusiasm to new heights with a petition for the abandonment of the coin toss at the 2007 Super Bowl kickoff at www.usarps.com, in favor of a decisive game of Rock Paper Scissors.”

In 2006, this first-of-its-kind tournament in the United States attracted more than 10,000 competitors -- of which 264 competed at the championship finals in Las Vegas. Determined to add to the fun, many finalists donned creative costumes ranging from ketchup and mustard bottles, to historic vikings, to Wizard of Oz characters and even “lady luck” herself to psyche out their opponents. RPS found itself elevated in the public eye through national media reports of competing leagues and recognition that it was on its way to being an organized sport with established strategies and a loyal following. Judges began ordering lawyers to use the technique to publicly settle disputes, and a one-hour special highlighting play-by-play action from the 2006 Bud Light/USARPS League championship aired on A&E on June 12.
