Anheuser-Busch Donates Canned Water To Prepare For Hurricane Rita Relief
Sept. 20, 2005
As Forecasters Project Rita to Hit Texas Gulf Coast, Anheuser-Busch Ships 15,050 Cases of Drinking Water to Texas
FORT COLLINS, Colo., (Sept. 20, 2005) – While Texas Gulf Coast residents brace for the approach of Hurricane Rita, Anheuser-Busch Cos., Inc. is preparing to supply emergency drinking water immediately after the storm.
Anheuser-Busch is shipping seven truckloads of canned drinking water, or 361,200 cans, to several of its independent wholesalers near the Gulf Coast in Texas. The water will be delivered to Del Papa Distributing branches in Victoria and Beaumont, Silver Eagle Distributing in Cypress, and Wismer Distributing in Baytown.
Anheuser-Busch is prepared to send additional water if the need arises. The wholesalers will be ready to distribute the water as soon as emergency relief agencies call for it.
Safe drinking water is one of the top priorities for hurricane victims and relief-agency workers following many hurricanes. In the last three weeks, Anheuser-Busch has donated 5.7 million cans of water to relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina.
“Anheuser-Busch and its wholesalers are always willing to step up and lend a hand to our neighbors when natural disasters occur,” said Mike Harding, vice president of operations for Anheuser-Busch. “Anheuser-Busch is proud to provide fresh water to those who may be affected by Hurricane Rita.”
The water was canned at the Anheuser-Busch Fort Collins, Colo., brewery. Metal Container Corp., a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Cos., supplied the can bodies through its Windsor, Colo., plant and the can lids from its Oklahoma City, Okla., facility.
In addition to the 5.7 million cans of drinking water donated to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, Anheuser-Busch, its foundation, wholesalers and employees will donate $3 million combined to aid victims of Katrina. The company also has donated goods, such as clothes and other items valued at approximately $1 million.
Helping communities cope with natural disasters has been an Anheuser-Busch tradition since 1906 when Adolphus Busch made a donation to victims of the San Francisco earthquake. Today, in addition to providing monetary support, Anheuser-Busch breweries package fresh drinking water and donate it to emergency relief organizations for distribution to those in need.
Based in St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch is the leading American brewer holding 50 percent of the U.S. beer market. The company is American-owned and brews the world’s largest-selling beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Anheuser-Busch also holds a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s leading brewer, and a 27 percent share in Tsingtao, the No. 1 brewer in China. Anheuser-Busch ranked first in the U.S. beverage industry in FORTUNE magazine’s 2005 “America’s Most Admired Companies” and in the top 30 on FORTUNE’s 2005 “Global Most Admired Companies” list. The company is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and is the world’s largest recycler of aluminum beverage containers.
