Anheuser-Busch International

Overview

Anheuser-Busch International, Inc., is the international beer subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. Anheuser-Busch International was established in 1981 and is responsible for the company’s foreign beer operations and equity investments. Its activities include production, sales and marketing of the company’s beer brands in international markets as well as establishing and maintaining equity investments with brewers around the world.

Anheuser-Busch International establishes and operates the company’s facilities outside the United States as well as licensed brewing and export agreements. Anheuser-Busch International has employees around the world, a majority of whom are local nationals familiar with the beer industry in their native countries.

Anheuser-Busch sells Budweiser and other brands in key beer markets around the world. In 2007, Anheuser-Busch’s international sales volume (excluding equity affiliate brands) was 24 million barrels (28.2 million hectoliters). The company’s share of its international equity affiliates’ volume was 32.9 million barrels (38.7 million hectoliters), giving Anheuser-Busch a combined international volume of 56.9 million barrels (66.9 million hectoliters) for 2007, a 5.2 percent increase compared to 2006.

In June 2008, Anheuser-Busch purchased the remaining 50 percent ownership of the Crown Beers India Ltd. joint venture from its partner, Crown International. The acquisition included the joint venture’s 500,000-hectoliter brewery in the southern city of Hyderabad. Anheuser-Busch acquired the Harbin Brewery Group Ltd., the No. 5 brewer in China, in 2004. Equity investments include a 50 percent interest in Grupo Modelo in Mexico, a 27 percent position in Tsingtao Brewery Company Ltd. in China and an 8 percent investment in Compañía Cervecerías Unidas S.A. (CCU) – Argentina.

Anheuser-Busch International operates 16 breweries – 14 in China, one in the United Kingdom and one in India. In April 2007, Anheuser-Busch announced it will build a greenfield brewery in Foshan, China, which is scheduled for completion in late 2008.

Budweiser also is locally brewed in nine other countries outside the United States under the direct supervision of Anheuser-Busch brewmasters. They are: Argentina, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Panamá, Russia, South Korea and Spain.

Growth Objectives

To continue building Budweiser as an international brand, Anheuser-Busch International uses four fundamental strategies:

  • Maintain Budweiser’s signature taste – which is refreshingly different from local brands – all around the world.
  • Develop and implement sales tools to drive distribution and service at retail.
  • Deliver innovative marketing that builds Budweiser’s global image, including advertising and sponsorships of premier international sports, music and entertainment events.
  • Maintain a global network of local sales and marketing professionals to manage the company’s operations in key international markets.

Anheuser-Busch has equity investments in leading brewers in high-growth beer markets. The selection of countries, affiliates and investment decisions is based on:

  • A focus on countries with good beer industry volume and profit growth potential.
  • Creating relationships with companies that are leaders in their local industry.
  • The ability of the relationship to add value and incremental growth through participation in the management of the partner company.
  • A good return on investment.
